I started in the late 70's with Yang tai chi as a teenager growing up in the projects of Northview Heights in Pittsburgh , PA. I learned tai chi because that is what my older brothers were practicing along with other styles of karate, judo, and kung fu. I learned it for self defense, period. At that time I never saw all of the flower tai chi you see today. Nothing wrong with practicing for health but self defense was my initial purpose.
